2007 Mission To Haiti

Fishing

We had another successful mission in Aquin, Haiti. We worked mostly with the boats on this trip. We had purchased six smaller boats. These are about twelve foot in length - carved out of Mango trees. We purchased the trees then hired someone to cut them down after that the boat maker carved the boat out the tree right there. Then came the task of getting the boats to the sea. We hired Haitians to carry the boats about an hour and a half and then met trucks to carry them the rest of the way. These new boats will be used to get the fishermen out farther in the sea to catch larger and more fish.

With the donated money, we also purchased two large, fifteen foot sail boats, sails and large blue nets. The fishermen will be contracted out to use the boats but must put a percentage of their extra income toward putting their children in school. Our goal is to help the whole fishing community prosper with this project.
