Medical Update | The Farmers | The Fishermen

Connie Marthaler: I had found that the families I had visited last Jan. ‘06 were doing fairly well. Most had cleaned up their living areas and some had even built on to their huts. One heart-warming story was about a little boy named Ashley. He was a healthy new born in January, but when I saw him in October he was very sick. Ashley had stopped nursing at 3 months and was very malnourished, full of scabies, and worms. He was very weak and could hardly hold his head up. But, with God’s Grace, I went into town to get formula, powdered milk, beans and rice and clean water. The French Sisters were in town and I asked them if they would take Ashley to their clinic for malnourished and preemie babies. They took him and Mom the next morning and I hear he is doing much better.

I
did not get to speak with the farmers this past trip because when I was there they were all way out in the fields and I couldn’t find them. What I saw of their crops looked very good.
We spent most of our time working with the fishermen this past trip. We tried to mend a boat, but had no success with the chalking I brought from Wisconsin. In March, I am purchasing some regular boats and one larger boat. They will be Haitian Helping Haitian Foundation fishing boats.
My goal will be to let the fishermen use them in order that they can get out further in the sea to catch bigger and more fish. In return they have to prove that they will bring the fish back for the women to sell at market and they will all prosper from this.
These boats are being purchased by generous donations given usually in a loved ones name. I am still working on fixing some of the older boats and possibly treating the new boats before they go into the water. [back to top]
